My Commitment to Accessibility
At Dream Speak Design, I believe the web should be a place where everyone can access information, connect with others, discover creative work, and participate in the services and experiences that matter to them.
I am committed to making my website as accessible and welcoming as reasonably possible to people with disabilities, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, voice recognition, magnification, captions, or other assistive technologies.
I continually work to improve the accessibility and usability of my website and to reduce barriers that may prevent someone from fully accessing its content, services, or information.
Accessibility Standards
I design and maintain this website with accessibility best practices in mind and work toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, where reasonably practicable.
WCAG is an internationally recognized set of recommendations for making websites and digital content more accessible to people with disabilities. These guidelines address a wide range of accessibility considerations, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, and neurological disabilities.
Accessibility is an ongoing process rather than a one-time task. Websites can change as new content, images, features, forms, videos, documents, and third-party services are added, and I continue to review and improve accessibility over time.
Accessibility Features & Practices
I aim to incorporate accessibility practices throughout my website, including:
Alternative text (alt text): Providing meaningful text descriptions for images where appropriate so that people using screen readers can understand important visual content.
Descriptive links and buttons: Using link and button text that helps visitors understand where an action or link will take them.
Clear headings and structure: Organizing content with meaningful headings and a logical page structure to make information easier to navigate.
Keyboard accessibility: Working to ensure that interactive portions of the website can be accessed and navigated using a keyboard.
Color and contrast: Choosing colors and text combinations with accessibility and readability in mind rather than relying on color alone to communicate information.
Readable text: Using legible typography, appropriate sizing, spacing, and page layouts that support comfortable reading.
Forms: Using clear labels and instructions for forms and other interactive elements wherever the platform allows.
Descriptive content: Writing page content, navigation labels, and other website elements with clarity and usability in mind.
Video and audio: When video or audio content is provided, making accessibility accommodations such as captions or transcripts when reasonably practicable.
Responsive design: Designing the website to function across different screen sizes and devices.
Zoom and magnification: Avoiding unnecessary design choices that prevent visitors from enlarging website content using standard browser or device features.
These practices are intended to support access for people using a variety of devices, browsers, assistive technologies, and methods of navigating the web.
Photography & Visual Content
Photography is an important part of my work, and I recognize that visual content can create particular accessibility barriers for people who are blind or have low vision.
Where an image conveys meaningful information, I make reasonable efforts to provide alternative text or an equivalent text description. Decorative images may be given minimal or no alternative text when appropriate so they do not create unnecessary interruptions for people using screen readers.
Because photography is inherently visual, some aspects of photographic work cannot be fully translated into text. When a detailed description of an image would be helpful or necessary for accessing information about a particular photograph, I welcome requests for additional descriptions or other accessible formats.
Third-Party Content & Services
Some portions of this website may rely on third-party platforms, applications, embedded content, or services that I do not control. These may include, but are not limited to, scheduling tools, payment services, social media content, video platforms, maps, forms, or other embedded applications.
While I make reasonable efforts to choose and use accessible tools, I cannot guarantee or control the accessibility of third-party content or platforms.
If you encounter an accessibility barrier involving a third-party service while using my website, please let me know. I will do my best to identify an alternative way for you to access the information or service.
Accessibility of Client Websites
As a website designer, I also believe accessibility is an important part of creating a thoughtful, inclusive online presence.
When I design websites for clients, I incorporate accessibility-conscious practices into my design and build process, including considerations such as image alt text, heading structure, color contrast, readable typography, descriptive links, keyboard navigation, and accessible forms.
However, website accessibility is influenced by many factors beyond the initial design and build. These may include content added by the client, third-party integrations, platform updates, plugins or embedded services, uploaded documents, videos, social media feeds, and other content or functionality outside of my direct control.
For this reason, I do not represent or warrant that a website I design will remain fully accessible or legally compliant with every applicable accessibility requirement after launch.
I encourage every website owner to treat accessibility as an ongoing practice and to review their website regularly as content and technology change.
